I am thinking to apply for student credit card. I want to know are there any hidden or annual fees on student credit card? If yes, what are they and how much are they?
I currently use an add-on credit card, where my father is the primary cardholder. Add-on cards are a great way to access the benefits of a premium credit card without having to apply for one individually or pay any separate joining or annual fees. Most features and rewards of the primary credit card—such as reward points, cashback offers, airport lounge access, fuel surcharge waivers, and other privileges—are shared with the add-on cardholder. However, it’s important to note that while the card can be used independently, all transactions made on the add-on card are billed to the primary cardholder’s account, and the responsibility for repayment lies with the primary cardholder.
Most student credit cards in India do not charge an annual fee, especially if they are linked to a primary credit card or issued against an FD (Fixed Deposit). However, you should watch out for hidden charges such as
Late payment fees- Range between Rs.100 to 500
Cash advance fees- 2.5% to 3% of the withdrawn amount
Over-limit charges-2.5% of the over-limit amount
Foreign transaction fees- 2%-3.5% of the transaction amount
What is add on credit card?
An Add-On Credit Card is a supplementary card banks can issue to the family members of primary cardholders. All the expenses incurred on the additional Credit Card are to be paid by the primary Credit Card holder resulting in reaching card milestones quicker. The credit limit on the add-on card is generally the same as that on the primary Credit Card.
Most student credit cards don’t have hidden charges or high annual fees. In fact, many of them come with zero joining and annual fees to make it easier for students to build credit early.
That said, you still need to watch out for a few things like late payment fees, interest on unpaid amounts, and sometimes cash withdrawal charges. These aren’t really hidden but can catch you off guard if you’re not careful.
So before applying, check the official fees and charges page of the card you’re considering. As long as you pay your bills on time and avoid cash withdrawals, student cards are usually pretty low maintenance.
