How to update my mother’s name in my birth certificate?

I recently noticed that my mother’s name is printed incorrectly on my birth certificate, and I’m not sure how to get it corrected. Has anyone gone through the process of updating their mother’s name in their birth certificate either online or by visiting the municipal office? How long does it take, and what documents do I need to submit?

I was also curious about this because many of us notice that our mother’s name is misspelled or missing on the birth certificate and want to correct it without running around government offices.

How to update my mother’s name in my birth certificate online

  1. Open your state birth portal

Visit the municipal corporation website or the state CRS portal where the birth was first registered (for example, crsorgi.gov.in, mcgm.gov.in, or your city e-governance site).

  1. Log in or create account

Use your mobile number; an OTP arrives. Key it in and you reach the dashboard.

  1. Choose “Correction in Birth Certificate”

Click the “Correction/Update” tile and select “Parent Name Correction” from the menu.

  1. Fill the small form
  • Enter the birth registration number and date of birth exactly as printed.

  • Write the present (wrong) mother’s name and the proposed (correct) name.

  • Upload the documents listed in the table below (each scan under 200 KB, JPG or PDF).

  • Pay the online fee (₹50–₹200 in most states) and submit. Save the acknowledgement number.

  1. Track and download

Use the “Track Status” link on the same portal. Most cities issue the updated certificate within 7–15 working days. You can download the PDF or collect the printed copy from the ward office.

Remember: If the child is above one year, or if the change is major (like a completely different name), most states ask for a notarised affidavit or even a court order first. Complete that step before you file the online correction.
