Transactions generally not eligible for EMI conversion?Peak curiosity unlocked

So today when i was headed for my daily commute…I stopped at the BPCL petrol pump for refuling my vehicle and whn i swiped my SBI BPCL CC…an idea struck me can i convert this purchase into emi wouldn’t be that convenient..Any one has given any thought on this??

Hello there @Shivam…With another Banger of a question!..you are like hero for this community.. Not all heroes wear capes—some ask bangers like this.
Answering your question I have to dig up the whole internet…And i curate this list

:cross_mark: Transaction Type :prohibited: Why It’s Not Eligible
Cash withdrawals Treated as credit advance, not purchases. No merchant involved.
Wallet loads (Paytm, PhonePe, etc.) Not a physical product/service; considered cash-like.
Fuel transactions Often excluded due to fluctuating fuel surcharges and low margins.
Jewelry/gold purchases High fraud risk, speculative asset, often excluded by policy.
Rent payments (via apps) Viewed as P2P or non-commercial; banks flag these as sensitive.
Education or donation payments Not considered consumer spending by many banks.
International transactions High FX conversion risk and GST complications.
Government payments (taxes, challans, etc.) Government payments are often not routed through EMI-enabled gateways.
Multiple partial transactions If not a single, clear large payment, bank’s EMI system may not allow it.
Already discounted/EMI-marked payments (like Amazon/Flipkart No-Cost EMI) These are already EMI and may not be reconverted or rescheduled.
UPI payments via credit cards (if allowed) These are still new and mostly treated like cash or wallet loads.

I hope this helps..
Happy swiping…:waving_hand::waving_hand:

Nice thought, but unfortunately, fuel purchases are generally not eligible for EMI conversion on most credit cards, including SBI BPCL. Same goes for a few other categories like wallet loads, cash withdrawals, and certain utility or government payments.

EMI options are usually offered for retail purchases like electronics, appliances, travel bookings, or other high-ticket items. Fuel spends are considered recurring and low-margin, so banks don’t let you split them into EMIs.

You can always double-check in your card’s app or customer care, but for something like a ₹1,500–₹2,000 fuel swipe, EMI conversion won’t be allowed in most cases.
