What is the process for birth certificate correction in India?

Has anyone here recently gone through the process of correcting their name or details in a birth certificate online in India? I’m planning to do it and want to understand how the steps and document verification actually work.

I was also curious about this because many of us notice spelling mistakes or wrong dates on a birth certificate and want to correct them without visiting government offices multiple times.

How to correct your birth certificate in India (online and offline steps)

  1. Find the correct state portal

Open the municipal corporation website or state CRS portal where the birth was first registered. Examples:

  1. Log in or create account : Use your mobile number; an OTP arrives. Key it in and you reach the dashboard.

  2. Choose “Birth Certificate Correction” : Click the “Correction or Update” tile and pick “Name Change”, “Date Change”, or “Parent Detail Change” from the drop-down menu.

  3. Fill the small form and upload papers

  • Enter the birth registration number and date of birth exactly as printed.

  • Write the present (wrong) detail and the proposed (correct) detail.

  • Upload the documents listed in the table below (each scan under 200 KB, JPG or PDF).

  • Pay the online fee (₹50–₹200 in most states) and submit. Save the acknowledgement number.

  1. Track and download

Use the “Track Status” link on the same portal. Most cities issue the updated certificate in 7–15 working days. You can download the PDF or collect the printed copy from the ward office.

Remember: If the child is above one year, or if you want a completely new first name, most states ask for a notarised affidavit or even a court order first. Complete that step before you file the online correction.
