American Express Gold Card: How to Apply Online, Eligibility Criteria, Documents & Approval Timeline in India

I travel occasionally and want a card that offers membership rewards and hotel perks. I came across the American Express Gold Card but have no clue about the application process or approval criteria in India. Has anyone applied recently? What’s the chance of getting approved?

American Express Gold Card Eligibility Criteria:

I have applied for this card a few months ago. The following is how I planned and went through the process:

  • You will have to be a resident Indian, and above the age of 18 years, you do not have an upper age limit.

  • The minimum income bracket per year is 6 lakh (employed or self-employed).

  • I had a very high credit rating, which was approximately 750+ and a clean record- Zero defaults.

  • Amex usually aims only at applicants residing within Tier 1 or Tier 2 cities (Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, etc.)–one of my friends was rejected with a reference to the ineligibility of the city.

  • Should have an operational bank savings or current account with an Indian bank.

How I Applied for the American Express Gold Card Online:

I did not use a third-party web portal but rather I applied the American Express India web portal. It was entirely digital and involved just 10 or so minutes:

  • Applied by clicking on the Gold Card and then Apply Now

  • Personal information of the customer entered: name, PAN, DOB, mobile number, email

  • Added economic information: yearly take home pay, bank account

  • Acquired e-KYC on the basis of Aadhaar verification (real-time)

  • Copies of documents: income documents, address documents and photographs

  • I clicked submit and was given confirmation of the application instantly

Documents Required for the AMEX Gold Card Application:

  • PAN Card
  • Aadhaar Card (id and address proof)
  • In case you are in salaried employment, show income proof using your salary slips or form 16. In case you are an entrepreneur, upload your ITR or recent bank statements.
  • A digital upload of one passport size photograph.

Approval Process & Card Delivery Timeline:

It took me 24 hours to get a verification call. Approvals went through after 2 days and I received the card after 5 work days.
