Are PMJAY and Ayushman Bharat the same scheme?

I often hear two names: Ayushman Bharat and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). Are these two different government health schemes, or are they the same thing?

Yes, for all practical purposes for a beneficiary, PM-JAY and Ayushman Bharat refer to the same health insurance scheme. To be precise, “Ayushman Bharat” is the name of the overall national health mission, and “PM-JAY” is the official name of the health insurance component within that mission.

Ayushman Bharat: The Overall Health Mission

I was speaking with a public health official, and he explained the structure clearly. He said that “Ayushman Bharat” is the name of the entire, large-scale national health initiative launched by the Government of India. He described it as a big umbrella that has two main pillars designed to address healthcare at different levels.

PM-JAY: The Health Insurance Component

The official then explained that the most well-known pillar of this mission is the one that provides the ₹5 lakh health insurance cover for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. The official name for this specific insurance component is the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). The “Ayushman Card” that beneficiaries receive is the card for the PM-JAY scheme.

Why the Names are Used Interchangeably

My friend, who is a journalist covering health policy, explained why the two names are often used as synonyms. He said that because the PM-JAY insurance scheme is the most visible and impactful part of the Ayushman Bharat mission, it has become common practice for the public, media, and even doctors to simply say “Ayushman Bharat” when they are referring to the health insurance card and its cashless benefits.
