Common recharge issues and delayed transaction problems by FASTag issuing banks

I often face problems with my FASTag. Sometimes my recharge doesn’t show up for hours, and other times the toll deduction message comes much later. What are the most common issues and why do they happen?

While the FASTag system has made toll payments much more convenient, users can sometimes face common issues like recharge delays or late transaction notifications. These problems are typically not a cause for alarm and usually result from communication lags between the various systems involved, the payment gateway, your bank, and the central FASTag server.

The Most Common Recharge Issue: Balance Not Updating

My friend recharged his FASTag, and while the money was instantly debited from his bank account, the FASTag balance remained unchanged. He was worried the money was lost. I assured him this is a very common delay. It can sometimes take from a few minutes to a couple of hours for the recharge to reflect because the transaction has to be cleared by multiple systems. His balance was correctly updated about an hour later.

Another Common Recharge Problem: Recharging the Wrong FASTag

My father has two cars, and both have FASTags from the same bank. Last month, he was in a hurry and was recharging his tag for a trip. He accidentally selected the registration number of the car that was parked at home instead of the one he was driving. It’s an easy mistake to make, which is why it’s crucial to always double-check the vehicle number before finalizing a FASTag recharge.

The Problem of Delayed Toll Transaction Alerts

I was on a long highway trip and passed through four toll plazas in quick succession. I noticed that the SMS alerts confirming the toll deductions only started arriving an hour or two after I had passed the plazas. A friend who works in IT explained that this delay is often because the toll plaza’s system sends transaction data to the bank in batches, especially during periods of high traffic, not always in real-time.

Dealing with Incorrect Transactions Due to Delays

A family member was charged for a return journey at a toll plaza, but she was only making a one-way trip. This was likely because the system’s delayed processing didn’t correctly register her previous passage. To resolve this, she had to log into her FASTag online portal, find the specific incorrect transaction entry, and raise a formal dispute with the transaction details to get a refund.
