How I Saved Money on My Car Purchase Using a Credit Card

Hello everyone! I recently made a major purchase a new car and I wanted to share how I strategically used my Axis Atlas credit card (which, by the way, is lifetime free, with no joining or annual fees) to maximize rewards on this big expense.
The Payments:
I made two significant payments using the card, both of which came with standard convenience fees for high-value transactions:
· Transaction 1: ₹375,550, including a 1.5% fee of ₹5,550
· Transaction 2: ₹343,799, including a 2% fee of ₹6,741.16
That’s a total of ₹12,291.16 in fees.
The Rewards:
Despite the fees, the rewards I received more than made up for it. Here’s the breakdown:
· From the first payment, I earned 7,510 Edge Miles
· Hitting the ₹3 lakh annual spend milestone gave me a bonus of 2,500 Edge Miles
· The second payment earned me 6,874 Edge Miles
· That also helped me cross the ₹7.5 lakh spend milestone, unlocking another 2,500 Edge Miles
That’s a grand total of 19,384 Edge Miles earned just from this car purchase.
The Value:
The Axis Atlas card allows you to convert Edge Miles to Accor Points at a 1:2 ratio, so:
· 19,384 Edge Miles = 38,768 Accor Points
· With each Accor Point valued at approximately ₹1.9, that’s ₹73,659.20 in value
Final Outcome:
After subtracting the ₹12,291.16 in fees, I still gained a net value of ₹61,368.04.
Considering I spent a total of ₹719,349 (including fees) through the card, my effective return comes to about 8.53%, which is an excellent value for such a large transaction.

This is such a smart move huge kudos for maximizing rewards on a big-ticket purchase!
Earning over ₹73K in value from Edge Miles, even after fees, is seriously impressive. That 8.5% return is better than most investments!

Quick question:
Did the dealership allow direct card swipes, or did you route it through a payment platform?

Thanks for sharing—super helpful for anyone planning a large spend

That’s a smart move and a great example of using a credit card strategically for a big-ticket purchase.

Even though you paid over ₹12k in convenience fees, the rewards more than made up for it. By using the Axis Atlas card, you not only earned base Edge Miles but also unlocked milestone bonuses. Since Edge Miles convert to Accor Points at 1:2, and Accor Points have solid value if you travel or stay at their hotels, the final return of over ₹61k is pretty impressive.

For anyone with planned high-value spends like a car down payment, this kind of approach can work well. Just make sure the transaction qualifies for rewards and you’ve done the math on fees versus benefits. Not all cards offer this kind of upside, but with Axis Atlas and the Accor transfer, it clearly paid off.
