I have a Canara Bank account that I don’t really use anymore, and it has zero balance. Has anyone here closed a Canara Bank account recently? What is the process, documents required, and are there any charges for closing it?
Honestly, closing my Canara Bank account was a real nightmare. My dad told me it should be super quick since there wasn’t any money left, but Canara Bank still put me through their crazy long process. The zero balance thing actually made everything worse because of weird charges I had no idea about.
Steps I Actually Followed
-
Go back to your original branch - Had to drive all the way to where I opened the account years ago. The branch close to my house basically told me to get lost.
-
Ask for their closing form - Got their official paper from the lady at the counter. She said they stopped taking handwritten letters or whatever.
-
Find out what money you owe - Turns out my empty account had SMS fees and some yearly charge just sitting there. Nobody ever told me about this stuff.
-
Put money in to pay fees - Had to deposit cash to cover those random charges. They refuse to close anything if you owe them even twenty rupees.
-
Turn off connected stuff - Cancelled mobile banking, internet banking, and discovered some really old insurance thing still hooked up to my account.
-
Give back all their junk - Returned my beat up checkbook, cracked debit card, and that huge passbook. They demanded every single thing back.
-
Bring papers and pictures - Carried my Aadhaar card, PAN card, phone bill, and bought passport photos from the guy outside the bank.
-
Grab receipt and wait around - Got some slip with numbers on it. Took like twelve days to finally get closure confirmation in the mail.
One thing I’d definitely recommend is grabbing the Canara Bank closure form from their website beforehand and filling it at home. Shows exactly what stuff you need so you don’t waste time making multiple trips like me.
