Is ABHA card necessary for Ayushman Bharat benefits?

I have an Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) card for the insurance scheme. Now I’m hearing about a separate ABHA card. Do I need to have an ABHA card to get the cashless treatment, or is my Ayushman card enough?

No, an ABHA card is not necessary to get the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme. The Ayushman card itself is the primary document required to avail cashless treatment. The ABHA card serves a different but complementary purpose related to your digital health records.

The Different Purposes of the Two Cards

I was discussing this with a hospital administrator, and he explained the difference very clearly. He said the Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) card is your “financial card” – it is the proof of your eligibility for the ₹5 lakh insurance cover. The ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) card, on the other hand, is your “health records card” – it is a unique 14-digit ID used to link and manage all your medical history digitally.

Why the Ayushman Card is the Only Essential Card for Treatment

My friend recently took his mother for a surgery using the scheme. At the Ayushman Mitra help desk in the hospital, the only document the operator asked for to process the cashless claim was her Ayushman (PM-JAY) card and her Aadhaar for verification. The ABHA card was not a requirement for the admission or for the approval of the treatment package.

How the ABHA Card is Being Integrated

The hospital administrator did mention that while it is not mandatory, the government is now encouraging the creation of an ABHA number for every Ayushman beneficiary. He said that now, when they treat a PM-JAY patient, they link the hospital discharge summary and lab reports to the patient’s ABHA number. This helps the patient build a digital health history that can be easily and securely accessed by any doctor during future consultations, but it is an added benefit, not a prerequisite for treatment.
