Is the SBI Annuity Deposit Scheme a better option than Fixed Deposit or SCSS for retirees?

I’m a retiree looking to invest in 2025. Between SBI’s Annuity Deposit Scheme, Fixed Deposits, and the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS), which offers the best combination of safety, returns, and regular income?

I was also curious about this because many retirees want a simple monthly income and are not sure which bank product fits them best.

Is the SBI Annuity Deposit Scheme a better option than Fixed Deposit or SCSS for retirees?

  • Monthly cash vs lump-sum later : Annuity Deposit gives you the same amount every month and finishes at the end. Fixed Deposit keeps the principal safe and returns it on maturity. If you need regular money, annuity is easier; if you want the big amount back later, FD is safer.

  • Rate difference is small : In 2025, SBI annuity and FD both offer near 7.5 % for seniors. The annuity payout looks bigger because it includes your own money each month, not extra interest.

  • SCSS pays more interest : Senior Citizens Savings Scheme gives 8.2 % today, higher than annuity or FD. It also returns the full principal after five years. If you can open SCSS, it gives more monthly income and your capital back.

  • Time limit vs lifelong : Annuity stops after 3, 5, 7 or 10 years. SCSS stops after five years. If you live longer, you must open a new plan. A life-long pension plan from an insurance company pays till death, so many people mix SCSS plus a small life pension.

  • Tax on all three : Bank cuts TDS on interest part in annuity, FD and SCSS. You can claim up to ₹50,000 interest deduction under 80TTB in all three.

  • Lock-in difference : SCSS locks money for five years. Annuity allows early exit up to ₹15 lakh deposit with a small penalty. FD can be closed anytime with a penalty. If you may need money early, FD or small annuity is better, if you will not touch the money, SCSS is fine.
