New to air india maharaja club and wanted to know what are the types of points that can be earned on it.
As a member of the Maharaja Club, you earn two types of points: Tier Points and Maharaja Points.
Tier Points are points you earn for flying with Air India and our 24 Star Alliance Airline Partners. Tier Points, or the number of flights you take, determine your Tier Status.
Maharaja Points are points you earn for flying with Air India our 24 Star Alliance Airline Partners and for purchases you make with our Partner brands.
Maharaja Points can then be spent to book Award Flights on Air India and Star Alliance Airline Partners flights or to upgrade your Cabin Class on Air India flights.
You earn both types of points with every booking. For example, if you’re in the Silver Tier:
For every INR 100 you spend on an Air India flight, you earn 8 Maharaja Points and 6 Tier Points. If you book directly on the Air India website or Air India app, you’ll earn 2 additional Maharaja Points for every INR 100 spent.
For purchases on a Partner brand, you earn Maharaja Points based on the partnership agreement. You do not receive Tier Points for these purchases.
-
Flight Miles (Base Points): You can earn it when you fly with Air India or its Star Alliance Partners. Points are calculated based on Distance flown, fare class, cabin (Economy, Business, First class), and Tier bonus (for silver Edge, Golden Edge, Maharaja club members)
-
Bonus Points: Additional points can be earned for booking during promotions, flying in higher classes, Tier status bonuses (Maharaja club gets up to 75% bonus)
-
Partner points: you can earn through spending with partner brands, such as Axis Bank Credit cards, Hotel partners, Car rentals, Retail and lifestyle merchants.
-
Status points: Special points used to upgrade or retain your tier. These points cannot be earned from credit card or shopping spends.
Air India Maharaja Club mostly has two kinds of points you can earn. First are the base miles, which you get every time you fly with Air India or partner airlines—they’re basically tied to how far and what class you fly. Then there are bonus miles that come as a perk depending on your club tier, so higher tiers get extra miles on top of the base ones. These miles add up and can be redeemed for flights, upgrades, and other rewards. So, your total points are a mix of what you earn flying plus any bonus miles your membership level gives you.
Hi OP, most airlines usually give you two types of points:
- Airmiles – These are earned through flying, credit card spends, or partner airlines. You can use them to redeem tickets and upgrades.
- Tier Points – These are earned mainly when you book and fly with the airline itself (not through other spends). They help you maintain or upgrade your status.
For example, I currently have 1,40,388 airmiles and 28,000 tier points. The airmiles can only be used for booking seats or upgrades, while the tier points are what keep my status active.
To break it down:
- A short Mumbai–Chennai flight on Air India gives about 450 miles if you’re on a base silver tier. Roughly 25% of that (around 110) counts as tier points.
- But if you spend ₹1,00,000 on jewellery using your card, you might earn about 1,000 airmiles — but no tier points.
So to move up tiers, you need a mix of actual flights and the tier points that come from them.
