I’ve been exploring health insurance options and wanted to understand what exactly is covered under a standard health insurance policy. Does it only include hospitalisation expenses, or are things such as surgeries, consultation fees, cost of medicines. and ambulance charges also covered?

Following things are covered in health insurance-
- Hospitalization Expenses
Covers the cost of staying in a hospital for treatment, including room rent, doctor’s fees, surgery, and nursing charges. - Pre-Hospitalization
Pays for medical tests, consultations, or medicines before you’re admitted—usually up to 30 days before hospitalization. - Post-Hospitalization
Covers follow-up visits, medicines, and tests after discharge—usually for up to 60 days. - Day-Care Procedures
Includes treatments that don’t need 24-hour hospital stay (like cataract surgery, dialysis, etc.). - Ambulance Charges
Covers the cost of using an ambulance to reach the hospital in emergencies. - ICU Charges
Pays for intensive care unit treatment if required during hospitalization. - Cashless Treatment
Allows you to get treated at network hospitals without paying upfront (the insurer pays directly). - Free Annual Health Check-ups
Some plans offer yearly check-ups at no extra cost. - AYUSH Treatments
Covers alternative treatments like Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (if included in the plan). - No-Claim Bonus (NCB)
If you don’t make any claims in a year, some insurers increase your coverage at no extra cost.
