What is not covered by pet insurance in India?

I’m planning to take pet insurance for my cat but I don’t want surprises later can anyone share what is usually not covered by pet insurance in India based on your experience?

Here is a list of what a standard Indian pet policy normally does not pay for.

What is NOT Covered Why It Is Left Out
Pre-existing illnesses Any problem your vet has already noted, diagnosed, or treated before the policy start date is excluded for life; even subtle earlier symptoms count.
Congenital or birth defects Hip dysplasia, cherry eye, undescended testicles, heart murmurs, etc., are excluded unless you buy a special rider.
Routine vaccinations Annual booster shots, de-worming tablets, and tick collars are excluded unless you add a “wellness” rider.
Pregnancy or whelping C-section, ultrasound scans, calcium drips, puppy milk replacers — all excluded.
Cosmetic or grooming procedures Nail clipping, ear plucking, de-matting, anal-gland expression, bathing, hair trimming are not payable.
Dental scaling / cleaning Teeth cleaning, polishing, or extraction not caused by an accident are excluded.
Herbal / homeopathic medicines Only allopathic vet drugs are refunded; alternative therapy bills are rejected.
Food, supplements, tonics Prescription diets, omega oils, vitamin syrups, glucosamine chews are excluded.
Elective surgeries Tail docking, dew-claw removal, ear cropping, spay/castration for birth control are excluded.
Boarding or day-care Kennel charges when you travel, or hospital “watching fees” beyond 24 hrs are excluded.
Death from specific listed viruses Some policies exclude death due to viral hepatitis, viral enteritis, leptospirosis unless you buy a “critical illness” top-up.
War, riot, nuclear risks Injury or loss arising from war, civil commotion, terrorism, radiation is excluded.
Neglect or cruel use Illness caused by unskilled handling, racing, organised fighting, or intentional harm is excluded.
Treatment outside India Bills from foreign vets or during international travel are not payable under domestic policies.

See, if the expense is preventive, cosmetic, pregnancy-linked, or already existed before the policy, assume it is not covered unless the insurer explicitly writes otherwise.
