What to do if UPI AutoPay failed but money is debited – when will refund come?

My UPI auto-pay mandate failed, but the money still got debited from my account. What should I do in this case, and how long will it take for the refund to come back?

I faced a similar issue when my UPI auto-pay subscription failed but the money still got debited from my account. This usually happens due to a technical glitch between the merchant, your bank, and the UPI system. The good part is that such failed transactions are automatically reversed.

Here’s what you can expect:

• In most cases, the refund is processed within 2–3 working days.

• Sometimes, depending on the bank and merchant, it can take up to 5 working days.

• You don’t need to raise a complaint immediately unless the refund is delayed beyond 5 days.

What you should do:

1. Keep a screenshot or transaction reference number handy.

2. Check your bank statement or UPI app regularly to confirm the reversal.

3. If the refund does not reflect after 5 days, raise a complaint through your UPI app or contact your bank’s customer care with the transaction ID.
