I just purchased a second hand car and the seller informed me that the policy cover is taking effect. However, I want to be certain whether the motor insurance is valid and under my name. In India is there a means to check the documentation of a motor insurance policy over the internet? I do not want to get myself into a spot when the policy is not legit.
You can easily verify the motor insurance policy details by using the official platforms online in India. When you are purchasing a second hand vehicle, changing an insurer, or even viewing your personal policy, it is paramount that said policy is live, valid, and properly amended.
-
Confirmed check through Parivahan Portal (Ministry of Road Transporting and Highways):
Go to know your vehicle details at https://parivahan.gov.in. Take your vehicle registration number and fill the captcha. You will find the status of the insurance, the expiry date as well as the name of the insurance company. Instead, it is one of the most trusted systems of checking the details of vehicle insurance online. -
Inquire on the IIB Portal (Insurance Information Bureau)
Visit the link https://iib.gov.in then click on Quick Links, then V-Seva. This will force you to key in information such as the car registration number, chassis number and engine number. This portal will display the current insurance information in case of vehicle insured with a registered insurer. -
Take a Look At The Website or Visit Your Insurers App:
With policy number or registered mobile number, most of the insurers allow you to access information about your policies. It is possible to download the PDF policy or have ownership and expiry verified directly.
Tips:
-
After you have undergone a change of ownership policy, make sure you insure the car under your name.
-
Compare expiry dates to prevent lapse of policy.
-
Exercise caution and have a soft copy of your motor insurance at hand at all times.
Yeah, totally makes sense to check, especially with a second-hand car. You don’t want to be in a mess later if the policy isn’t valid or still under the previous owner’s name.
The easiest way is to go to the IIB website (iib.gov.in). You can enter your car’s registration number there and it will show you if there’s a valid insurance policy, which company it is with, and the policy dates. It’s a quick check and pretty reliable.
You can also try the Parivahan VAHAN portal (parivahan.gov.in). Just enter your vehicle number and it will show you basic insurance details pulled from RTO records.
If you know the insurer like ICICI Lombard or Bajaj Allianz, go to their website and use their “policy status” or “verify policy” section using the policy number or your car number.
And one important thing, if the policy is still under the seller’s name, get it transferred to your name soon. Otherwise, claims can get rejected even if the policy is technically active.
So yes, you can check all of this online. It takes five minutes and saves you a lot of headache later.
